The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to reinstate the original academic calendar for BECE and WASSCE.
Speaking at the WAEC Distinction Awards ceremony held today, Mr Iddrisu stressed the urgency of reverting to the pre-COVID-19 schedule, which was disrupted during the pandemic. He stated that the return to the former timetable would help streamline academic planning and improve learning outcomes across basic and secondary schools.
Mr Iddrisu noted that while the pandemic created unavoidable delays and adjustments, it is now time for educational institutions to restore normalcy. “We must re-establish the structure students and teachers were familiar with before the pandemic,” he added. The Minister’s remarks have sparked renewed discussions around educational reforms and calendar adjustments that ensure both consistency and academic excellence within the Ghanaian education system.
