Dumsor Diaries: No Light at the End Yet

Ghanaians hoping to end the ongoing power crisis may have to wait much longer. Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has confirmed that the country’s energy debt is still a major challenge.
In an interview on Joy FM, he admitted that “dumsor” isn’t going away anytime soon due to unresolved structural and financial issues. According to the Minister, while efforts have been made to study and understand the energy system since the current administration took office, key problems remain particularly the issue of liquid fuel procurement. He explained that payments made by consumers through electricity tariffs do not cover the cost of these fuels. “Even if ECG collected 100% of electricity payments today, not a single cedi would go into buying the liquid fuels we need to power our plants,” he emphasized.
He added that building the necessary gas infrastructure would take 18 to 24 months—time Ghana doesn’t currently have. “This should have been done yesterday.
